Fieldwork

My fieldwork activites are mainly guided by the quest for Early Mesozoic dinosaurs, in order to better understand pre-Late Cretaceous dinosaur evolution. In current years, these activities have furthermore focused on terrestrial ecosystems of the Southern Hemisphere, since Gondwanan faunas are generally still much more poorly known than their Laurasian counterparts. These activities currently concentrate on Jurassic units in the province of Chubut, Argentina.

Below you can find a list of previous fieldwork activities.

January and November 2009: Prospection for and excavation of vertebrate remains in the Middle and Upper Jurassic of Chubut, Argentina.

March 2008: Prospection for and excavation of vertebrate remains in the Upper Triassic / Lower Jurassic Elliot Formation of South Africa.

April-May 2007: Prospection for vertebrates in Middle and Upper Triassic formations in the Cuyo Basin, Mendoza, Argentina.

May 2006: Prospection for vertebrates in the Upper Triassic of southern Thuringia and northern Bavaria, Germany.

September 2004: Fieldwork in the Cretaceous Chubut Group of Chubut, Argentina.

2000-2002: During my postdoctoral fellowship in Argentina I led a total of twelve fieldtrips into the Middle to Late Jurassic units of Chubut province. Furthermore, I led two expeditions into the Cretaceous of the same province and took part in a campaign to the Eocene. Work carried out during these fieldtrips included prospection for and extraction of vertebrate fossils as well as geological and palynological sampling.

September-December 1997: Twelve weeks of prospecting and extracting of vertebrate fossils with the University of Chicago in the Lower Cretaceous of central Niger, Africa, under the direction of Dr. Paul Sereno.

April-May 1994: Seven weeks of geological mapping in north-west Crete, Greece.

September 1993: Three weeks of screenwashing for microvertebrate remains in Lower Cretaceous sediments in Galve, central Spain, with the Free University of Berlin, under the direction of Dr. Thomas Martin.

July-September 1993: Six weeks of paleontological fieldwork with the Museum of the Rockies, Bozeman, Montana, in the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation of southern Montana, under the direction of Dr. John Horner.
